About

The department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest department on campus with around 450+ students, 39 faculty members and good infrastructure in terms of laboratories and other amenities.  We offer B.E. Mechanical Engineering and M.E. Industrial Safety Engineering. The UG programme is accredited by NBA, the National Board of Accreditation. Apart from courses defined in curriculum, we offer a number of value added courses and impart various skill trainings to the students.  In addition to the well-furnished laboratories that come under curriculum, we have few special laboratories to encourage innovations. We also have a strong academy for training students to appear for GATE exam.

It is a distinct honour for me to serve as Head for Mechanical Engineering Department, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli. There are UG and PG programmes at present B.E., in Mechanical Engineering and M.E., in Industrial Safety Engineering. Our graduate and post-graduate students are highly sought by high-tech companies and by prestigious universities and laboratories. There are times of sweeping change in higher education and in scientific research and development.Department has well qualified and dedicated faculty with well-developed laboratories. We impart quality engineering education through sound theoretical knowledge, hands on laboratory as well as computational skill and exposure to recent technologies by visiting industries & expert talk. Facilities

MANUFACTURING LABORATORY – I (LATHE SHOP)

Manufacturing Technology Lab-I includes Lathes, Shapers, Slotter, Bench grinder and Radial drilling machine. A metal rod of irregular shape, size and surface is converted into a finished rod of desired dimension and surface by machining by proper relative motions of the tool work pair. This laboratory helps the students to give practical experience in various operations that can be performed in lathe, shaper, drilling, milling machines etc. and to equip with the practical knowledge required in the core industries.

MANUFACTURING LABORATORY – II (SPECIAL MACHINES)

Manufacturing Technology Lab – II enhances students to study and practice the various machining operations that can be performed Gear Hobbing, Gear shaping, Centerless grinding, Cylindrical grinding, Surface grinding, Horizontal and Vertical milling machines and capstan-turret lathes etc. This lab helps the students to study and acquire knowledge on various basic machining operations in special purpose machines and its applications in real life manufacture of components in the industry.

STRENGTH OF MATERIALS LABORATORY

The Strength of Materials laboratory features Universal Tensile Testing machine with double single shear attachment, Torsion Testing Machine, Impact Testing Machine, Brinell Hardness Testing Machine, Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine, Spring Testing Machine for tensile and compressive loads, Metallurgical Microscopes and Muffle Furnace. Students will have the opportunity to study the mechanical properties of materials when subjected to different types of loading and to perform Tension, Torsion, Hardness, Compression, and Deformation test on Solid materials.

FLUID MECHANICS LABORATORY

The Fluid Mechanics Laboratory features Orifice meter setup, Venturi meter setup, Rotameter setup, Pipe Flow analysis setup, Centrifugal pump/submergible pump setup, Reciprocating pump setup, Gear pump setup, Francis turbine setup, Kaplan turbine setup. Students will have the exposure in verifying the principles studied in Fluid Mechanics theory by performing experiments in lab.

ENGINEERING PRACTICES LABORATORY

Student entering the first year of engineering degree should undergo the workshop practice. The Engineering Practices Laboratory features Carpentry, Fitting, Welding, Plumbing and Sheet metal. Students will have the exposure in fabricating carpentry components, use welding equipment’s to join the structures, perform sheet metal works, basic fitting operations and plumbing with hands on experience.

MECHATRONICS LABORATORY

The Mechatronics Lab features advanced instruments that allow students to design and experiment with controllers of mechanical or mechatronic machines. It features the following categories of instrument: real-time controllers and industrial pneumatic and hydraulic controllers. In this lab students may experiment with Image Processing and other advanced controllers. And may design and code embedded PIC microprocessors or Siemens PLC units. They may also learn how to computer control pneumatic or hydraulic circuits.

CAD LABORATORY 

CAD (Computer Aided Design) is used to accomplish preliminary design and layouts, design details and calculations, creating 3-D models, creating and releasing drawings, as well as interfacing with analysis, marketing, manufacturing, and end-user personnel. CAD Lab features AutoCAD, Solid Edge, NX-Nastran. This laboratory helps the students to gain practical experience in handling 2D drafting, 3D modelling software systems and expose the students to different applications of simulation and analysis tools.

CAM LABORATORY 

Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the use of software and computer-controlled machinery to automate a manufacturing process. In this lab, the students can able to study the features of CNC Machine Tool and expose to modern control systems. This lab features CNC lathe, CNC Vertical Machining centre, CNC EDM and High end integrated modeling and manufacturing CAD/CAM software. Simulation CAM Software for CNC Lathe and CNC Mill is available.

METROLOGY AND MEASUREMENT LABORATORY 

The Metrology and Measurement laboratory features with measuring instruments such as Micrometer, Vernier Caliper, Vernier Height Gauge, Vernier depth Gauge, Slip Gauge Set, Gear Tooth Vernier, Sine Bar, Floating Carriage Micrometer, Profile Projector/Tool Makers Microscope, Autocollimator, Temperature Measuring Setup, Force Measuring Setup, Mechanical/Electrical/Pneumatic Comparator, Torque Measuring Setup, Coordinate measuring machine, Surface finish measuring equipment. Students will have the opportunity to use different measurement equipment’s which is widely used in industry for quality inspection.

DYNAMICS LABORATORY

The purpose of the dynamics of machinery is to apply the knowledge from the field of dynamics to specific problems in engineering. High performance machines are to be sized not just based on static, but often primarily based on dynamic considerations. This laboratory helps the students to apply the principles of kinematics involved in various mechanisms and to apply the principles of Dynamics involved in various Experiments.

THERMAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

In this laboratory, students will have the opportunity to learn the working principle of I.C. engines (both SI and CI engines), performance and characteristics in terms of heat balancing, economical speed variations, air fuel ratio influence on the engine. The machines and equipment used to determine experimental data include cut models of 4stroke diesel engine, 2stroke petrol engine, 4stroke and two stroke petrol engines with required specifications, Multi cylinder SI engine, Single cylinder Diesel engine for performance and speed test which is suitable to tests on variable compression ratios.

HEAT TRANSFER LABORATORY

The Heat Transfer laboratory equipment’s are used to determine the thermal conductivity of a metal rod, convective heat transfer coefficient for free and forced convection and correlate with theoretical values, the effective thermal resistance in composite slabs and efficiency in pin-fin, surface emissivity of a test plate and to calculate the temperature distribution of study and transient heat conduction through plane wall. This laboratory helps the students to study the heat transfer phenomena to estimate the relevant coefficient and to study the performance of refrigeration systems.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY LABORATORY

Industrial Safety Laboratory were outfitted with better quality equipment's to direct different tests by the students like Noise level analyser, Analysis of fumes gas, Velocity of wind, Measurement of Particle size, Impact test, Friction Tester. Environmental Safety auditing Software’s are trained for the students. Students are well trained with firefighting equipment’s.

CENTRE FOR EXCELLENCE – FANUC LAB

FANUC Lab was established in the year 2019 in collaboration with FANUC India Private Limited, Bangalore. The objective of this laboratory is to train the students on FANUC CNC Simulator and NC Guide Software to make them industry ready professionals. Through this lab, Department of Mechanical Engineering conducting 60 hours training program on CNC Programming Turning and Milling.

MODELING – APPLIED LAB

This Special lab is to develop the professionals in Design Engineering field to design, implement, adapt and evaluate tools, machines, products and mechanical components.  Software used is Solid Works and it is a 3D solid modelling package. Designing in a modelling package is more beneficial because it saves time, effort and money that would otherwise be spent prototyping the design. Students gain more knowledge in produce simple and complex parts, assemblies and drawings.

MANUFACTURING & FABRICATION – APPLIED LAB

This Special lab is to provide innovative and challenging opportunity for the aspiring engineers by involving them in national level competitions and new product development. The students can gain experience of diagnosing and resolving design and functional issues arising in the course of a project. If a budding engineer desire to gain knowledge, a well-oriented training will support and nurture them towards a successful manufacturing career. A positive culture will generate a quality end product as the students will feel more invested in their roles.

GREEN ENERGY – APPLIED LAB

This Special lab is to develop a new Energy storage technology and its management systems, design and develop charging technologies for energy storage devices, to encourage students to participate in National/International Events in the Energy storage area, to develop new engineering technologies for Electrical Energy storage devices, to design and develop the energy storage management systems and monitoring systems, to design and develop the power conversion units for recharging the energy storage systems.
